Chapter 45: Who Cares About Learning When a Festival is on the Horizon

Sporting a somewhat chipper spring to her step, utterly giddy she'd finally get to teach what she wanted to and not be stuck doing only homeroom nonsense and admin-like stuff, Alureino hopped her way to the front of her homeroom and clambered onto her podium. Clapping her hands together with a fireceness to sting the numbness out of them, the curio expert turned elite class teacher waited for everyone, apart from Inkaro, to finish whatever they had been doing prior to her arrival before she began speaking to them.

"Okay, you lot. Today, I can finally teach you a lot about elite-level curio rune scribing. And I'll be damned if another class trip assignment nonsense will get in my way of doing my job."

"May-am, is it really necessary for all of us to learn how to do this? In my case, I wouldn't be able to use any curio thingies I'd potentially make anzy-way." The snaky demon girl asked as she kept her sleeve-covered arm raised as high as she could raise it, which wouldn't have broken over her fellow Star Course students had she not been seated at the front.

Hearing the logically sound chain of words, the curio-abundant lady slumped her shoulders as she turned her exhausted gaze to the younger girl who shared in her fashion of wearing extra-long sleeves. The demon girl happily waved her raised hand when she somehow realised Alureino was looking at her.

[Anazenpha Zen is a very short, very fair-skinned, seventeen-year-old female Plechona, of the demon race, with the appearance of a ten-year-old human girl; she has unkempt and fluffy, slightly long, snow-white hair with pale green to Persian green gradient tips. Two slightly large, high hair buns that are as unkempt and fluffy as the rest of her hair. From the stem of her right hair bun, there are two tails of hair, which are also unkempt and fluffy. Constantly closed eyes, A fifteen-foot-long, small barbed tongue that splits in two at the end to make the shape of a Y. Sharp little fangs with a faint crystal appearance that can extend if needed. And, a five-inch-long pale green snake tail protruding from the base of their spine with a snow white underside]

[Anazenpha is wearing a teen-sized, zipped-up light purple coat that's had the lower half cut off to make it barely reach past her waist with a zipper that's triple the size of a normal one. The coat has a snow-white, super fluffy collar that can puff up in size to cover the lower half of her face. The sleeves of her coat are double the length of her arms and have super fluffy, pure-white cuffs. And, Persian green thigh-high leggings]

-A very large, thick, white marble-like material that has been carved to resemble a book opened at a hundred and fifteen degree angle. In place of any pages, there is a single, almost jet-black lapis lazuli, opaque crystal screen embedded into the inner side of the book. Connected at the top and bottom of the book's spine, it has two chains made of thick, alternating dark ocean blue and dark silver oval chain pieces. In the middle of its spine is an opaque dark-blue crystal stylus. She wears it on her back like a backpack.

For a brief stretch of time, the short woman genuinely considered not answering that question directly; given that she couldn't really refute it since she only ever cared about curios when she was in school, she had half a mind to let her do self-study during curio classes.

However, she knew it wouldn't reflect positively on her if the headteachers heard about her letting students skip out on classes and lessons without their express permission, which was an even bigger hassle than her boss' finding out someone broke the academy rules.

"Much to my begrudging respect, Inkaro is proof enough that knowing the things we can't personally do can help in furthering your knowledge in the specialisation you are interested in," Alureino said calmly, the reluctance in her voice so abundant it almost seemed comically intentional.

"Oh... makes sense," Anazenpha murmured, nodding astutely as she took in her homeroom teacher's explanation with curious intent. However, before the woman could get on with her lesson, another hand rose, making ALureino mentally groan as she waved her hand for the hand raiser to ask his question.

"Before the lesson starts, isn't there an announcement you're supposed to make?" the werewolf teen asked timidly, despite his appearance suggesting a more assertive demeanour and voice should've emerged when he spoke.

[Noaskou Time is a slightly tall, light tanned-skinned, sixteen-year-old male surlanoue, of the demon race; he has long, thick purple dreads that are long enough to cover his eyes and looks like a mop. Piercing emerald-coloured eyes. Thick metalic fangs. Large, purple direwolf ears. Toned legs. Dark purple dog-like paw pads on his palms and the soles of his feet. And, three very long and fluffy direwolf tails with three dark purple metalic rings near the ends of each tail]

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

[Noaskou is wearing a faintly bleached lime green waterproof jacket with six metalic toggle buttons and a flared collar. A black t-shirt with bold purple rings on the sides near the bottom. Puffy purple shorts with metalic studs running around the hems. And, a faintly bleached lime green metal bracelet around each of his ankles]

Morphing her already unamused stare into a glare with no real target to aim it at, Alureino dropped her head onto her podium and groaned directly into the soft curio pillow she'd put there in place of a book: "Are you a calendar nut or something?"

"Sort of?" The canine demon's mismatch from tone of voice and physical demeanour left Alureino unable to commit to any single response. His timid tone made her want to pity him. But his delinquent-esque sitting posture with his feet on his desk made her want to reprimand him for inflicting cringe damage on her by reminding her of her own delinquent past.

However, thinking on it, the ex-delinquent figured it wasn't done out of disrespect but because the floor was uncomfortable on his feet or something; such thoughts were born mainly from her desire to move on before the sight annoyed her any further.

"As Noaskou brought up, and what I suspect I'd've been asked to tell you about tomorrow, there will be a cross-school festival thing going on at the beginning of next month. That festival that the battle lovers always look forward to. There's a mandatory requirement of at least three students from each year's Star Courses to participate in their respective tournament exhibitions. And, I'm not going to force any of you to do it; that's up to you lot to decide," Alureino stated boldly before crossing her arms with a hint of smugness as the ensuing chattering she'd expected to occur occurred.

  Inkaro leaned towards Lizu.

"It's called the Halnuemi Enkindle Festival. Although the original purpose of the occasion was for high-potential individuals to obtain a stigma, it sort of evolved into more of an event for the many academies across the world to show off their pupils, with all the chosen students getting the chance to receive a stigma." Lizu finished off her explanation by snapping her fingers at the idea of getting chosen. It's not like she really cared about it personally, but figured Inkaro would be extra interested in her should she get a stigma. Now that, that was something she could get behind.

Inkaro unleaned from Lizu's direction and sat up properly before then leaning towards Enetha sitting to his right: "Do you think people who don't do the combat flanting will get a chance on entering the Phantasm Realm Gate under the academy?"

Enetha shrugged dispassionately, while slightly peering around Inkaro to watch Lizu put on a befuddledly offended expression as she side-eyed Inkaro. Feeling her words getting caught in her throat and leaving her momentarily mute as she found it surprisingly hard to talk to Inkaro, Enetha clacked the bases of her king chess pieces together until she fully ruminated on her words: "Not... sure, but I doubt anyone incapable of handling themselves would be allowed into such a chaotic place. So, I'd vote on being a part of the exhibition to be required for that."

Her prim and proper pronunciation gave Inkaro a wave of endearment, from how she tried to speak like a queen in a royal audience of the highest importance despite her child-like face. While the little princess's way of speaking hung in the air, Yuuvia sat behind her, feverishly jotting down Enetha's refined posture and enunciation for future reference, treating everything pertaining to the princess's actions as gospel and an item of worship.

There was a tug against his arm, and Inkaro found himself swung back in the opposite direction before he found his head nestled on top of Lizu's chest. While the majority of her fellow Star Course members were too busy discussing who should be their festival representatives, aside from Enetha, who was an envious red in the face from dragolyte's brazen display, but continuing to stare forward like she hadn't noticed, Lizu bore a stern gaze down on Inkaro.

"Oi, why did you even ask what the festival was if you already knew about it?" Lizu mumbled in a pout as she playfully jabbed the tip of her tail into the side of her fiancé's dome. "And, if you say something stupid like: I wanted to hear you talk about it. Then you should expect a long night of listening to me reading aloud. Understood?"

Inkaro blankly blinked at Lizu before cheekily grinning at the idea, deflating all of Lizu's gusto when she registered that her warning came off as an invitation to Inkaro. Not that she minded, as she lifted Inkaro back to an upright position and resumed staring forward.

"I predict the three will be... you, Grimmy, aaaaand Wolfgang," Myendi whispered cheekily while wagging her finger at a frowning Xythio. If looks could kill, he'd be in the running for a world record for most casualties caused by glaring, with Myendi getting the most assists.

"Can you shut it? The last thing I need is you jinxing others." Grumbling under his breath like he was having his strength rung out of him, Xythio rubbed his head as the thought of having to fight for others' amusement was a more grating idea than hearing Myendi talk. His annoyance was metaphorical gold for Myendi as she considered booping the guy on the nose. But she refrained from doing so, having enough respect for the guy not to risk getting him in trouble by ticking him off too much.
